Hammer of the Gods is a turn-based strategy game set in the worlds of Norse mythology. The player controls a tribe of Vikings striving to gain favour with the gods of the Norse pantheon. To do so, quests must be completed for individual deities while exploring the world, settling new areas and making war with other tribes.

The game mechanics are a mix of Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic. Towns and cities grow in population as the time passes, and allow more fighters to be recruited by the player. Combat is very similar to Heroes of Might and Magic except there are no unit stacks. Rewards for completing quests include gold, magic items and powerful units.
