The re-release of Transport Tycoon keeps the same gameplay formula, but adds three more terrain types (each with unique features, industries, etc.), improved and enhanced game mechanics, and the World Editor that allows players to create their own scenarios. Almost all vehicles from the original Transport Tycoon have been replaced with fictional counterparts to avoid trademark issues.
The playable demo includes two scenarios in the Toyland terrain, and also allows to play on a random map. However, the player can only build railways.
Originally a DOS game, Transport Tycoon Deluxe was re-released in 2026 as a Windows native application. Additionally, an open-source engine recreation exists called OpenTTD that polishes and enhances gameplay even further. OpenTTD can be also played as a stand-alone game with its own graphics, sound effects and scenarios.
