Instructie/opmerking

In the demo, make sure to set the game to one-player mode in the options to play against the AI in melee matches.

The game supports Gravis Ultrasound, but digitized speech and sound effects appear not to work with this type of sound output, at least in DOSBox.

Spelbeschrijving

Battle of the Eras is an incredibly cheesy versus fighting game with digitized characters, similar to Mortal Kombat but created by a team of young amateur developers from Canada. There are five playable characters, each with their own special moves, and two bosses.

The game is fully playable (save for occasional minor glitches) and offers a tournament mode, melee fights against human or AI opponents, and even modem play. As the title suggests, the story revolves around a tournament of fighters from different time periods (by all means not a novel concept in the genre), featuring odd characters that include a half-elf from the 8 century and a cyborg from the future. All are portrayed by the teenage developer crew of the game, meaning that there are no outstanding visuals, yet at the same time making the game was no small feat in itself for them.

Battle of the Eras was originally distributed as shareware, with the free demo limited to two characters only. Apparently, not a single copy was sold, but author Joseph Mocanu eventually made the full version available with the aid from Brandon Cobb, who now hosts the "official" site of the game. A donation to the author can be made via that page as well.
