Spelbeschrijving

Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space (popularly known as BARIS) is a computer adaptation of the board game LIFTOFF! that chronicles the first two decades of the US-Soviet space race. The player takes control of each side's space programme starting in 1957 and must succeed in landing astro/cosmonauts on the Moon and successfully bringing them back to Earth by 1977.

The game is played in turns, each covering one season of a given year (two turns per year), and as the space programme director, the player needs to plan missions, recruit astronauts, research and purchase equipment, prepare launches and monitor relations with the US or Soviet government. BARIS was intended to be both an educational and a recreational game of strategy and management.

Initially BARIS was sold commercially, with a floppy version and an Enhanced CD-ROM release. After the contract with publisher Interplay had expired, author Fritz Bronner declared the game freeware, allowed the fans to redistribute the DOS version and released all game data along with the source code under the GNU GPL license in 2005. This became the basis for an updated source port for Windows and other platforms, now called simply Race Into Space, available as a free download from SourceForge and GitHub.
