Spelbeschrijving

Freaks! is a dark fantasy first-person shooter that may superficially look like Wolfenstein 3D or The Catacomb Abyss, but is actually even more basic than these games. You venture into realms of horror and madness to fight hordes of monsters, ghouls, demons and other abominations, as well futuristic robots in a separate episode (somewhat like in The Catacomb Trilogy).

However, you will soon notice that the engine here is more simplistic than in Wolfenstein 3D, as player movement is strictly grid-based, with only 90 degree turns possible, like in older RPGs such as Might and Magic III: The Isles of Terra. You are also limited to one weapon only and do not have to hunt for useful pickups: even health is replenished by defeating monsters. Despite these limitations, the game is actually quite fun to play, and the monster and texture design does a good job at creating disturbing, unearthly environments, arguably even more convincingly than The Catacomb Abyss.

Freaks! was originally sold as shareware, with only the first episode out of four available in the unregistered version. Each episode takes place in a different realm and features its own set of enemies, as well as the player's weapon sprite (but the weapon works the same anyway). The game was eventually released as freeware. What's more, the authors made the source code public and released a free updated Windows version that upgrades the engine to a more Wolfenstein 3D-like fare that allows for free movement and turning.
