Spelbeschrijving

The Catacomb Abyss is a first-person fantasy-themed shooter that runs on a somewhat simpler version of the Wolfenstein 3D engine with just 16 colours and PC speaker sounds. However, the game holds quite well and is fun to play.

The plot continues the story of an earlier id Software game simply called Catacomb 3-D. With the evil lich/necromancer Nemesis defeated in that game, his minions build a mausoleum for their master, which soon starts to spread evil around the area. The player once more takes on the role of the wizard Petton Everhail, setting out to defeat whatever horrors lurk in the mausoleum, and beyond.

Gameplay in The Catacomb Abyss is very similar to Wolfenstein 3D, except that you fire magic fireballs instead of guns, and destructible walls are used instead of doors. What makes this game stand out is that the levels are much more diverse, and there is a big roster of fantasy creatures as enemies, some specific to only certain levels and environments. There is no automap, but the player has a crystal ball that acts as a radar, and can be upgraded with magical gems to detect certain kinds of monsters. Each level is also split into sub-sections that have names, making it easier to navigate even without a map.

The Catacomb Abyss has two sequels, originally published as The Catacomb Apocalypse and The Catacomb Armageddon, which offer more of the same gameplay, but with different levels, textures and monster designs. The Catacomb Abyss was distributed as the shareware "episode" of this trilogy and as such can be played as a stand-alone game.

All Catacomb games are sold from digital stores, and the source code is available under the GNU GPL license. Native Windows ports exist, so you don't have to play only in DOSBox.

G: Toggle God Mode
I: Get all the items

O: Displays an overhead view
